In the early stages of forest growth, tens of thousands of stems may compete per acre for limited light, water, and nutrients. A pre-commercial thinning selects the strongest and most desirable trees—favoring those that best align with landowner goals such as improving wildlife habitat, enhancing aesthetics, supporting water quality, or eventually producing quality timber.

This work is called pre-commercial because the trees removed are too small or low in value to offset the cost of the operation.
